This article is talking about a NextEra Battery Storage system that caught fire in May of this year. NextEra ( aka Corby) has also been trying to work with City of Vacaville a couple years ago to place a BESS on N. Meridian Road but was denied a zoning change. Roads Closed, Trains Halted Over 'Smoldering Battery' May 31, 2023 UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.: South Fork Wind released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that it had evacuated contractors working at its new Cove Hollow Road substation when it learned about the battery-station fire.

They let this battery energy storage system burn out. This fire was in an industrial area, NOT near homes. The businesses were eventually evacuated as it continued to burn. "Fire smolders at Chandler battery storage facility nearly two weeks later" By Amy Cutler Published: Apr. 29, 2022 at 10:04 PM PDT CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – A fire at a battery storage facility has been burning for nearly two weeks. As firefighters monitored the situation, businesses within a quarter-mile were urged to evacuate Friday. That order ended around 7 p.m. To read the entire article click the button below: “The greatest lesson is these high-capacity batteries have such amazing thermal capacity--our traditional firefighting measures will not work. " “It’s a miracle all of them are alive,” said Bryan Jeffries, president of the 7,000-member Professional Firefighters of Arizona and a captain with the Mesa Fire Department. The Surprise APS facility event was a powerful, painful lesson. “The bottom line for us is sustainable energy is growing and it’s here to stay. The reality is we are going to be dealing with (fires at) these energy storage places that use high-capacity batteries. This is all new and emerging technology,” Jeffries said. “It’s not like rushing into a fire—an offensive approach. This is going to have to be a far more defensive approach,” the union president said. “It’s a whole new animal. We’re going to find these all over the place, (from) small versions in people’s garages storing solar power to massive ones.” To continue reading here is the entire article: The latest fire at California’s Moss Landing battery complex was contained and didn’t cause any injuries, but it still highlights the need for better safety systems at storage facilities.
The biggest grid battery complex in the U.S. is also the most fire-prone. The latest fire ignited in the wee hours of Tuesday, September 20 at utility PG&E’s Elkhorn plant in the coastal town of Moss Landing, California. The Tesla-supplied battery plant sits at a utility substation right next door to the Moss Landing battery plant, owned by electric generating company Vistra, which suffered two fires of its own in the last year and had to shut down for months. Monterey County confirmed that last week’s fire affected only one Tesla Megapack enclosure, and it was contained by the evening of the same day. Nevertheless, the incident locked down a stretch of California’s iconic Highway 1, and triggered warnings to local residents “to keep windows closed and turn off ventilation systems” pending testing for hazardous emissions. Local press covered the economic impacts of the shelter-in-place order, and the Santa Cruz Sentinel editorial board called the incident a “stark reminder of new technology risks. This was the 3rd fire in 3 years and was a Tesla Megapack that caught fire and shut down an 8 mile stretch on Highway 1 and a 4 mile area was told to shelter in place. Residents were instructed to turn off their HVAC system to outside air due the the toxins released. Most of the area was farmland and some businesses, not like the site here that has a large subdivision. Here is a link to the news report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PTlqCCMX-0

This is a Battery Energy Storage (BESS) that was on fire last week! This is actually the second one in a week in Warwick NY caused by a storm. The reporter says they went to the BESS to see the fire but had to leave because it smelled so bad... She's reporting from 1/2 a mile away and says she can smell the smoke right near the fire station... Also note how everything is evacuated- there aren't even firemen at the site... 1/2 a mile away... Also note the doors blown off the first container... From the pic, it looks like the first container started the fire- they said either lightening or power surge is to blame- and it spread through the second container, and the third is currently burning, and it looks like the fourth has burn marks and may spread and hit thermal runaway... One of the most well documented Battery Energy Storage fires was a 2MW system that overheated in Surprise, AZ in 2019. Check out this detailed report of the incident (linked below). What we found interesting, is the way the chemical fire reacted. The highly toxic hazardous gas and vapors emitted from this small battery storage facility hovered at 2-3 feet above the ground and spread over a larger area BEFORE it caught fire. (Shown in photo below) The firemen were trained in HAZMAT conditions but not specific to battery storage. They waited for an extended time until they believed it was safe to enter the container to try to extinguish the overheated batteries. When they opened the door, there was an explosion that ejected a fire captain roughly 70ft from the container. Four firefighters were sent to the hospital with critical injuries from the explosion. The second photo shows the container after the explosion. You can see where it bulges out and the place where the fire captain was ejected to and a bush had caught fire. Now mind you, this is a SMALL system 2MW similar to a shipping container. The one being proposed in our city must be in the 200-300MW range OR LARGER size due it’s large footprint, 32acres. Please spread the word that the City Council will be voting on a battery storage system to be put in Vacaville and speak up about your concerns with this project to the Council.
